Didier Deschamps Responds to FIFA’s Argentine Referee Appointment Ahead of France vs Morocco

Didier Deschamps has refused to be drawn into the controversy surrounding FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine refereeing team for France’s World Cup quarterfinal against Morocco.

The decision to select Facundo Tello and an entirely Argentine on-field crew has created one of the biggest pre-match refereeing debates of the tournament. With Argentina still alive in the competition and recent refereeing controversies already dominating the World Cup, many supporters questioned whether FIFA could have avoided unnecessary pressure by choosing officials from another country.

Deschamps, however, has taken a calmer approach. The France coach said his team’s focus is on Morocco, not the nationality of the referee, and made it clear that he trusts the officials to handle the match professionally.

Why the appointment caused debate

The controversy is not about whether FIFA broke its rules. It did not.

A referee cannot officiate a match involving his own national team. Argentina are not playing in France vs Morocco, so Facundo Tello is eligible under FIFA’s neutrality rules.

The concern is about perception.

France and Argentina have recent World Cup history after the 2022 final, and Argentina could still be a direct rival later in the tournament. On top of that, FIFA is already dealing with heavy criticism after Argentina’s dramatic win over Egypt and Egypt’s official complaint against François Letexier.

That is why this appointment became a talking point before the ball was even kicked.

The full Argentine refereeing team

Referee: Facundo Tello
Assistant Referee 1: Juan Pablo Belatti
Assistant Referee 2: Gabriel Chade
Fourth Official: Darío Herrera
Reserve Assistant Referee: Cristian Navarro

Tello is one of Argentina’s leading FIFA referees and has previous World Cup experience. He also refereed Morocco’s famous 1-0 win over Portugal at the 2022 World Cup, a detail that adds another layer to the story.

Deschamps sends the right message

From a coaching perspective, Deschamps’ response was smart.

If France publicly question the referee before the match, they risk creating unnecessary pressure on their own players. They also give the story even more oxygen.

Instead, Deschamps has tried to remove the referee from the centre of the conversation.

That is exactly what experienced coaches usually do before major knockout matches. The best approach is to show trust publicly, keep focus on the opponent, and avoid giving players an excuse before the match has even started.

Why FIFA may still face criticism

Even if the appointment is legal, FIFA could still be criticised for the optics. At this stage of the World Cup, every decision is magnified. Every foul, yellow card, penalty appeal or VAR check in France vs Morocco will now be judged through the lens of the appointment debate.

That is not ideal for Facundo Tello. A referee should start a match with a clean slate, not under a cloud of suspicion created before kick-off.

The VAR Verdict

Didier Deschamps handled the situation professionally. FIFA’s appointment of an all-Argentine team does not break the rules, and Facundo Tello should not be judged before the match begins. He is an experienced international referee and deserves to be assessed on his performance, not his passport. But football is not only about neutrality. It is also about the appearance of neutrality.

In that sense, FIFA created an avoidable debate. After several days of World Cup refereeing controversy, appointing an entire Argentine team for a France quarterfinal was always going to attract attention. Now the pressure is clear: Tello must deliver a calm, accurate and controversy-free performance.
