The quarterfinals have now been completed, giving a much clearer picture of which referees have impressed most throughout the tournament. These rankings are based on consistency, accuracy, match control, VAR communication and overall performances.
1. Clément Turpin 🇫🇷 — 9.0/10
Outstanding tournament. Excellent control, calm personality and two correct VAR reviews during England vs Norway.
2. Michael Oliver EN — 8.9/10
One of the most consistent referees at the World Cup. Spain vs Belgium was another excellent performance.
3. João Pinheiro 🇵🇹 — 8.8/10
Handled a difficult Argentina vs Switzerland quarterfinal confidently and showed courage on the Embolo decision.
4. Raphael Claus 🇧🇷 — 8.5/10
Solid throughout the tournament with good disciplinary control.
5. Facundo Tello 🇦🇷 — 8.0/10
Managed France vs Morocco well overall, although the penalty decision remains highly debated.
6. François Letexier 🇫🇷 — 6.5/10
A difficult tournament after the controversy surrounding Argentina vs Egypt. Despite criticism, FIFA has not taken disciplinary action against him.
The VAR Verdict
The race to referee the World Cup Final is becoming increasingly competitive. Turpin, Oliver and Pinheiro have separated themselves from the rest of the field, but FIFA’s final decisions will depend on more than referee ratings alone.
